What people say about (Ken McDonald Golf Course)

Charlie Mckinlay

This place has great rates and is the perfect course for somebody looking to play their first 18. Pace is almost always great, conditions are way better than the price point would suggest. Pretty straight forward course design makes it super fun for those getting into golf. If your planning a large extravagant golf trip you probably don't need to add this to your list but if you are looking for a nice relaxed golf outing you should check this place out.

Great course. With a huge driving range that is lit until in the evening so you can practice late. Nice putting green and great chipping area. Great value. $10 for a large bucket is a great deal.

My girlfriend was excited to go golfing for the first time, and I found this course close to my house here in the Chandler area. I figured a small course like this would be a good opportunity to teach a beginner like herself. Nothing too fancy with experienced players who might get impatient. Naturally, play was a little slow at the start, as we let other players behind us pass us with no issues. I tried teaching her some basic rules and etiquette of the game, such as where to drive the cart when retrieving the ball and when to let other players play through when play becomes slow. About halfway through our 18-hole play while putting, a crazed middle-aged heavy set man sped directly at us in his golf cart. Shouting, "You guys gotta go! You're done!", he jumped out of the cart and stomped towards us, his face boiling red while huffing and puffing. Confused, we both asked him if everything was okay and why he was so enraged. This individual was offended by the fact that we parked our cart a little too close (not on) to the green, which was a simple mistake as my girlfriend had never played before and was still learning. While trying to calm him down and explain it was an accident, he continued to shout expletives and insults at us, saying things like we 'don't belong here' and that 'we should go bowling with the bumpers up'. We kept on offering him to play through us, but he would not let it go. He continued to reveal that ever since the start of our game, his group had been watching us with binoculars as we parked close to the green multiple times. Strange why they would choose to stalk us and do this for 9 straight holes without just confronting us once they noticed this on the second or third hole and have it corrected sooner. He also explained that he knew the owner and would have us expelled from the course. My mind is still blown why someone would get so offended and grotesquely upset about something so silly like this. This was heart breaking for me, since golf should be a relaxing and calming sport with the most etiquette and sportsmanship amongst players. It has always been like that for me as someone who grew up playing the game. So for this to be my girlfriend's first experience with the game was very sad. After this hostile confrontation, the individual eventually left and continued with his group in front of us. Once we got back to the clubhouse to return our cart, an employee from the shop walked out and told us we were no longer welcome at the course ever again. We tried explaining our side of the story to this employee and how ridiculous the situation was, but they sided with the crazed individual who almost attacked us and probably exaggerated everything making it sound like we were criminals trying to intentionally destroy their beloved course (which was already completely trashed, cigarette buds everywhere, dead grass, water bottles scattered everywhere, and homeless people fishing by the canal). People like this are what gives golf a bad name sometimes and deterrers beginners from playing such a wonderful game with a rich history. I've heard this place has gone downhill with new management over the years. This experience makes sense now. I will gladly be spending more money on an actual nice course to avoid dangerous people like this again who take the game WAY to seriously.. serious enough to verbally insult and shout down a young girl who is playing for the first time making inevitable mistakes. We still can't believe that after all that, the staff still had the audacity to kick us out. One of the craziest experiences I've ever had golfing.
